A leader from the community for the community
Aníbal Acevedo-Vilá was born and raised in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. Acevedo-Vilá began his career as an aide for Puerto Rican Governor Hernández Colón. In 1992 at the age of 30, he was elected to the Puerto Rican House of Representatives, and after only five years in the insular legislature, he was elected as minority leader. During his tenure in the Puerto Rican legislature, he introduced legislation to improve Puerto Rico’s infrastructure and emergency preparedness. In 2001, Acevedo-Vilá was elected as Puerto Rico’s 18th Resident Commissioner ousting a long term Republican incumbent. As Resident Commissioner he was instrumental in stopping the Navy from using natural land in Puerto Rico for bomb testing sites and improved VA services for Veterans that live on the island. In 2004, Acevedo-Vilá ran and was elected as Puerto Rico’s Governor, immediately working with the Puerto Rican legislature to address the island’s deficit and safeguarding their natural resources.
