LUZ RIVAS

A CHANGE FOR CALIFORNIA

Luz Rivas has dedicated her professional career fighting to ensure that every Californian has the

opportunity to learn, prosper, and succeed.

Elected to the State Assembly in 2018, Rivas served as Chair of the Assembly Committee on

Natural Resources and currently serves on the Assembly Committees on Budget; Revenue and

Taxation; and Communications and Conveyance. She has written and passed legislation to help

protect workers from extreme heat, provide services for homeless youth, and prevent plastic

pollution. She brought $10 million to create a Regional STEM Institute at Los Angeles Mission

College.

Prior to her service in the Assembly, Rivas founded DIY (Do it Yourself) Girls, a non-profit

organization dedicated to helping girls in the San Fernando Valley become interested in math and

science. The organization has helped set thousands of young women on the path towards economic

empowerment, independence, and self-confidence.

Luz was raised in the San Fernando Valley by a single mother who cleaned bathrooms at a local

hospital. Initially, the family rented a room in a house, and later lived in a converted garage and back

houses throughout the Valley.

As a 5th grader, Luz became interested in technology and engineering, she enrolled in a state

program that helped students excel in math and science and go on to college in these fields. Luz

ultimately graduated from MIT with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and then received a Masters

of Education from Harvard University.
