About Tony Vargas


Tony Vargas is a state senator in the nonpartisan unicameral Nebraska legislature. He’s the son of Peruvian immigrants. He decided to run for Congress after losing his father to COVID-19. His first term as a state senator began in 2017, where he became the first outright elected Hispanic legislator in Nebraska. He’s currently the highest ranking Latino in the state.


As a senator, Tony has developed a reputation for civility and working with anyone to get things done for Nebraska workers and small businesses. He has successfully passed legislation to strengthen our public schools, improve access to health care, encourage technology and innovation, and improve consumer protections.


Tony began his career as a public-school teacher, receiving “Most Outstanding Teacher” and “Teacher of the Year” awards, and has worked in the non-profit and education sectors, striving to improve the quality of life and educational opportunities for thousands of children across the United States.


The first generation of his family to graduate college, Tony earned his Bachelors of Arts degree at the University of Rochester and a Masters in Education at Pace University. Tony and his wife, Lauren, are raising their two young kids, Ava and Luca, in Omaha. They are proud parishioners of St. Frances Cabrini Church, where Tony and Lauren were married.


BOLD PAC is dedicated to increasing diversity in the House and Senate by getting more Latinos and Latinas elected. In 2020, BOLD PAC helped elect two new Latino Members to the House -- Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernandez, the first Latina to represent New Mexico’s 3rd district, and Congressman Ritchie Torres, the first openly LGBTQ+ Afro-Latino. BOLD PAC also helped send two new Latinos to the Senate -- Senators Ben Ray Lujan and Alex Padilla. Additionally, BOLD PAC played an integral role in protecting the Democratic majority by​​ endorsing 117 candidates across the country and contributing $1 million directly to their campaigns. These efforts helped elect and re-elect 45 Members of Congress.

Sobre Tony Vargas


Tony Vargas es senador estatal en la legislatura unicameral no partidista de Nebraska. Es hijo de inmigrantes peruanos. Decidió postularse para el Congreso después de perder a su padre por COVID-19. Su primer mandato como senador estatal comenzó en 2017, donde se convirtió en el primer legislador hispano electo en Nebraska. Actualmente es el latino de mayor rango en el estado.
