Washington D.C. - As part of its commitment to expanding Latino representation in Congress, today CHC BOLD PAC is endorsing Tony Vargas in NE-02. CHC BOLD PAC Chairwoman Linda Sánchez released the following statement on this endorsement:


“BOLD PAC is proud to endorse Tony Vargas in NE-02. As a State Senator he made history in 2016 by becoming the first Latino to be elected to the Nebraska Legislature. Whether it’s fighting for affordable access to healthcare, equity, or education, Tony has been an uncompromising ally to the Latino community and working families,” said ​​CHC BOLD PAC Chairwoman Linda Sánchez. “He’s the son of Peruvian immigrants who worked hard in the manufacturing industry. He knows firsthand what it means to struggle to make ends meet and understands the critical issues that Nebraskans face today. We look forward to fighting alongside him in Congress.”

ABOUT TONY VARGAS

Tony Vargas is a state senator in the Nebraska legislature and the son of Peruvian immigrants. His first term as a state senator began in 2017, where he became the first elected Hispanic legislator in Nebraska. He’s currently the highest ranking Latino in the state, and has supported legislative action on issues related to equity in education, innovation, juvenile justice, healthcare access, improvement of consumer protections, and reforming predatory lending practices. Vargas is a member of the Appropriations Committee, where he has prioritized state funding to those most in need. 


Prior to serving as state senator, he was appointed to the Omaha Public Schools Board in 2013. He received his MS in education from Pace University and served as an Americorps fellow through Teach for America in Brooklyn. In 2008, Vargas was awarded “Most Outstanding Teacher” while working with Teach for America.

SOBRE TONY VARGAS


Tony Vargas es senador estatal en la legislatura de Nebraska e hijo de inmigrantes peruanos. Su primer mandato como senador estatal comenzó en 2017, donde se convirtió en el primer legislador hispano electo en Nebraska. Actualmente es el latino de más alto rango en el estado y ha apoyado la acción legislativa en temas relacionados con la equidad en la educación, la innovación, la justicia juvenil, el acceso a la atención médica, la protección del consumidor y la reforma de las prácticas de préstamos abusivos. Vargas es miembro del Comité de Apropiaciones, donde ha priorizado el financiamiento estatal para los más necesitados.


Antes de servir como senador estatal, fue designado miembro de la Junta de Escuelas Públicas de Omaha en 2013. Recibió su maestría en educación de la Universidad Pace y se desempeñó como becario de Americorps a través de Teach for America en Brooklyn.
