CHRISTY SMITH

A leader from the community for the community

Christy Smith began her career in public service as an analyst at the U.S. Department of Education and served as a PTA and site council member. She is the founder of the Valencia Valley Technological Education Foundation. Smith ran and served two terms as a Governing Board Member and as President of the highly successful Newhall School District.
In 2018, Smith ran for the California’s State Assembly and won a seat in a hard-fought election. She beat the Republican incumbent by over 5,000 votes and was the first Democrat to hold that seat since 1978. As an Assemblywoman, she has worked on behalf of the hardworking men and women she represents. She wrote the law to compensate victims of human trafficking so that they have a chance to rebuild their lives. She also chaired the State Assembly's Joint Legislative Committee on Emergency Management, where she co-authored a law that ensured first responders had mental healthcare covered in their workers’ compensation policy. In her role as Assemblywoman, Smith was able to secure funding more than $6 million in funding for a local community health clinic, senior center and a childcare facility.
Smith is a graduate of UCLA and lives in Newhall, with her husband Phil, along with their two daughters, Chelsea and Chandler.
